John Spanos: “It’ll be nice to have a big video board with clear replays” This quote represents the outrageously indicative of Spanos family’s sense of entitlement and cheapness. They had offers to help fix this at Q but refused to help with the aging stadium.
Chargers President John Spanos, grandson of majority owner Alexander Spanos and son of CEO Dean Spanos, appeared on the “Business of Sports with Andrew Brandt” podcast recently to speak with the host about the logistics and financials behind the Chargers controversial move to Los Angeles.
Unfortunately for Spanos, the media and fans have educated themselves thoroughly on those topics, which means that no one from the Spanos family will be getting away with lazy explanations about a move that most agree didn’t have to happen.
It’s hard to understand why the Chargers ownership family continues to take shots at their former city and stadium as a way to justify the move. If anything, it only seems to further sour the public against them.
No one is arguing that the facility was in a state of disrepair. They’re arguing that it should have been taken care of a very long time ago by the incredibly rich owners who profited off of the city of San Diego and their fans for over 30 years.
So the media and fans on Twitter were quick to point out his hypocrisy when Spanos made a backhanded comment about the state of the video boards at Qualcomm Stadium. Kevin Acee, longtime Chargers reporter for the San Diego Union-Tribune and vocal critic of the Spanos family’s handling of the relocation to Los Angeles, went on to assert that A.G. Spanos (President of Business Operations) had refused to invest in new video boards at Qualcomm. Take a look at this tweet from Kevin Acee: Didn’t want to “throw bad money at good.” I practically begged AG to see how good this would’ve been. Not Spanos way”
So it’s on record that help for improvements was available but that the Spanos believed it would be a waste of their money to invest in the aging venue.
